Rock The Grill 2018

    On September 28th and 29th, Old Town Rock Hill fired up it's first KCBS sanctioned BBQ competition!  The Main streets of downtown were lined with some of the best BBQ in the region, as well as music entertainment, a car show, and plenty of kids activities. 

    All the profits will benefit the construction of the Rock Hill Miracle Park.  Miracle Park is a project designed for people of all disabilities to play and work! It will be located in Rock Hill, SC and will be the first of its kind in the US! Leaders from Winthrop University, the City of Rock Hill, and the York County Disabilities Foundation are teaming up to develop the site at Winthrop Park. It will include two baseball fields, multi-purpose fields, an inclusive playground to accommodate children with disabilities, as well as retail space that could be developed to employ people with disabilities. Miracle Park will offer public programming such as Miracle Leagues for various sports and will host Special Olympic competitions on a statewide, regional, and national level.

    The creation of this park will significantly impact the quality of life of people with disabilities living in this community, allowing them the opportunity to use outdoor amenities catered to their needs.

The Contest: The Rock the Grill BBQ Cook-off in Rock Hill, SC is a state BBQ competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS). KCBS representatives will be onsite. Judging starts at 11:30am on Sat-urday, September 29, 2018 using the blind judging system. The contest consists of four categories (chicken, pork ribs, pork, and beef brisket). Teams are required to cook in all four categories in order to be considered for the Grand Champion.


The proceeds from the public tasting portion of this contest will benefit Rock Hill Miracle Park. Miracle Park is a project designed for people of all disabilities to play and work! It will be located in Rock Hill, SC and will be the first of its kind in the US! Miracle Park will offer public programming such as Miracle Leagues for various sports and will host Special Olympic competitions on a statewide, regional, and national level.

KCBS Sanctioned: The Contest will be governed by the competition rules of the KCBS. KCBS rules and regula-tions can be obtained by visiting https://www.kcbs.us/about.php. The following rules and regulations also apply to this competition:


1. All cook teams are responsible for reading and following the KCBS rules and regulations.


2. All cook teams are responsible for reading and understanding the contest information on the following pages.


3. Each team must have a 5 pound or larger, 3-A, 40BC rated fire extinguisher near all cooking equipment.


4. Food or unapproved items are not to be distributed (given away or sold) to the general public by teams.


5. The head cook is responsible for the actions of the team. Any violation of the rules will disqualify the entire team from the contest and the team will be asked to leave the event grounds.


Festival Location: The contest and festival will be held in downtown Rock Hill, SC in the Fountain Park area located at the intersection of 300 East Main Street and Elizabeth Lane. In addition to the BBQ cook off, the festival will include: amusement rides, a classic car cruise in, live music all day and evening on Saturday, food trucks, and beer and wine. Directions and a map will be supplied well before the event.
 

Cook Team: A cook team shall consist of 1 head cook and as many assistants as the head cook deems necessary. A team may cook several pieces of meat per category, but may only turn in one entry per category. The turn in quantities will be a minimum of six (6) portions as stated in the KCBS rules. Any violation of the contest rules by any team mem-ber will disqualify the team from the contest. The head cook is responsible for the actions of the entire team. Please be respectful of our beautiful City and nearby neighbors.


Early Arrival: Teams who want to get here early are welcome to arrive on Thursday, 9/27 from 11am-4pm.We have a very nice RV area large enough to accommodate 40 guests at our BMX facility located approximately 5 miles from downtown. The address is 1307 Riverwalk Parkway, Rock Hill, SC. The RV spots contain water, power, and a dump sta-tion. The cost is $50 per day. Check-in: Check-in will take place from 9:30am-2:30pm on Friday at St. John’s Church (the physical address is 321 S. Oakland Ave however, you will enter the building on St. John’s Court) see map on last page for specifics. There will also be plenty of signs.
Prior to the competition the Head Cook will receive several emails with updated information of the contest and festival activities. The week before the competition an email will be sent providing check-in information, a location map, and directions.


Vehicle Parking: In addition to your truck/camper/trailer/toy-hauler/motor-home/primary vehicle, NO OTHER VEHI-CLES will be permitted on your competition cook site. All other permitted vehicles mentioned above must fit in your space. Vehicles are not allowed to park in designated travel lanes in the competition area. The travel ways must remain passable at all times for emergency vehicles. For safety reasons, all other vehicles must park in separate, designated cook team parking areas. Vehicles parked in the competition area will not be allowed to come and go. We kindly ask that you adhere to this policy. If you want uninhibited movement, please park in the designated cook team parking areas.
 

Meat Inspection: Meat inspection will take place from 10am-3:00pm on Friday at your site. The meat inspector will be on-hand to insure the competition meats are in compliance to the KCBS Rules. For KCBS competitions it is perfectly legal to trim the meat/pork/chicken in advance. If you are not ready for meat inspection during check-in, you will re-ceive a ribbon to hang on your site somewhere visible to notify inspectors you are ready for a site visit and inspection.


Cooks Meeting: The mandatory cooks meeting will take place on Friday at 4pm at St Johns Church. (the physical ad-dress is 321 S. Oakland Ave however, you will enter the building on St. John’s Court) see map on last page for specifics. There will also be plenty of signs.
 

Public Tasting/People’s Choice: To Benefit Rock Hill Miracle Park-while participation is not required we do hope that you will strongly consider this option as a way to help support Rock Hill Miracle Park. www.miracleparkrockhill.com/


Volunteers will be assigned to pick up your meat for the People’s Choice contest. The meat & aluminum pans will be supplied by the contest organizer after the 4pm mandatory meeting on Friday. Participating teams will be responsible for pulling their own pork and separating the ribs prior to pick up.


The public will be allowed to purchase sampling tickets for $10.00/10 tickets. They will use 1 ticket per 2oz. pork butt sample and 2 tickets for 1 rib sample. Included with their sample tickets will be voting tickets. Volunteers will serve the public at a separate nearby location. The public will have the opportunity to cast their vote for best pork and best ribs by placing their voting ticket in the corresponding jar of choice. The People’s Choice Champion will be awarded based the number of voting tickets received. The contest organizer will provide all meat for the People’s Choice and the items to be used for sampling, official jars for voting, tickets, and prize monies. Winners will be announced during the awards ceremony on the Fountain Park stage starting at 5pm.

Competition Cook Site:

  •  Each team will be assigned a competition cook site by the event organizers. Pits, cookers, trailers, motor homes, vehicles, tents or any other equipment shall not exceed the boundaries of the team’s assigned cook site. All sea-soning and cooking of product shall be done within the assigned cooking site. Teams shall not share an assigned cooking site or cooking device.

  • All travel ways must remain passable at all times for emergency vehicles. Please park all vehicles within the limits of your cook site or in the designated cook team parking areas.

  • Each team must supply its own cooking ingredients, grills/smokers, utensils, tables, chairs, wood, charcoal, water hoses, power cables, and other materials needed by team.

  • Open fires on the ground are not permitted. We understand that coals need to be created for smoking, so please keep all fires contained. Burn barrels will not be allowed on a paved cook site. A fire extinguisher must be readily available near the cookers at all times. Each team must have a 5 pound or larger, 3-A, 40BC rated fire extinguisher near all cooking equipment. If you do not have an extinguisher you will be required to obtain one before cooking.

  • Potable Water hook-ups will be available within 75’ of all cook sites. YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN HOSE FOR HOOK UP. Each team is provided, within 75 feet of their cook site, one (1) 120v/20amp duplex power outlet or a standard RV type 30amp or 50amp power outlet as selected on the team entry form. You must supply any adapters and extension cords. The City of Rock Hill Electrical Department will be onsite for any power needs. If necessary, personal generators may be used but it must be a quiet operating generator with a manufacturer’s noise rating of no more than 70dBa at 10 feet away. Any complaints of noisy generators may be cause to have the noise corrected immediately.

  • A few bags of ice will be available for sale, but we request that you pre-order your ice on the team application ($5.00 per 20lb bag)

  • Barrels will be available for dumping hot ashes/ coals. Grease should be disposed of with your regular trash (please double bag all bags containing grease). Trash shall be tied up and secured in a bag, then placed in large green gar-bage cans located throughout the cooking area. . Please don’t over-fill trash bags. Additional containers will be pro-vided throughout the competition site for the general public.

  • Public “Port-a-Johns” will be located throughout the completion site. A private Port-a-John can be reserved on the entry form for $75.00.

  • You are expected to leave your cook site in the condition that you found it. If your space is not completely cleaned before departure, you are subject to disbarment from future competitions.
